THE ADVENTURES OF BRAMBLE AND COULTOON by Ruth MacLean and Catherine Wilson
There are three volumes in this series, which tell of the adventures of two fire-making ponies from the Isle of Islay in Scotland. Each volume stands on its own as an independent adventure but taken together they add to the fun of getting to know the two ponies. The ponies have an abundant curiosity and love to travel both on the island and off it; they meet curious characters, who are not always kindly disposed to them; but in the end they are always happy to come home to their own field at the farm. The books are written for five to seven year olds. The colourful pictures made from simple cut-out pieces of paper mean that younger ones will also enjoy the stories. The books serve an excellent introduction to Scotland.
